Kate Maki and Brent Randall Announce Double Record Release Tour
Sudbury folk songstress Kate Maki and Toronto pop crooner Brent
Randall (The Pinecones) are teaming up for a Western Canadian tour in
support of their new records. Maki's "Two Song Wedding" and Randall's
"Sage" were both released last month to excellent reviews.
"Two Song Wedding", Kate's fourth album, was recorded in Tucson, AZ
with members of Giant Sand, Arcade Fire, and Calexico, and has been
declared her "best work to date" by both Now Magazine and The Ottawa
Citizen. Unforeseen circumstances (Kate's voice gradually
disappeared), unfamiliar elements (95 degree desert heat) and
unconventional musicians all played a part in the creation of this
"compellingly woozy" (Globe and Mail) record which "has a warm,
saturated sound established and maintained from the opener onward"
(The Coast). Tremendous support also continues to be received from
radio stations across North America including LA's KCRW, CBC's Radio
One, and the album is currently charting at #10 on Canadian College
Radio.
"Sage", Brent's second record, is a fully collaborative endeavour
with all four members of The Pinecones - Brent, Brian, Joel and Paul -
contributing songs to create an album with a sound that is truly their
own. Produced by Paul (Linklater) in his personal studio, Mal à
Mute, the boys set out to escape the stuffy corporate studios and
session musicians of their earlier work in search of a "groovier
scene". Both gritty and sweet, perplexing and infectious, this lo-fi
pop masterpiece is "a playful, proficient disc, chock full of good
tunes and cunning conceits" (Globe and Mail) and "a refreshing break
from what you're used to listening to" (Junnnk Tank).
The upcoming tour is not the first time the duo has shared the stage
- Randall played piano in Maki's band on a recent 35-date North
American tour with Great Lake Swimmers. Kate and Brent will be
